Whether you're a consummate professional in the world of private clubs or brand new to the industry, welcome.
00:00:20.344 --> 00:00:21.984
My name is Denny Corby.
00:00:21.984 --> 00:00:24.321
I'm your host In this episode.
00:00:24.321 --> 00:00:32.128
It's going to be short, but I just want to talk about something that's pushing my buttons and that is nose blindness.
00:00:33.331 --> 00:00:43.911
Nose blindness this has come up a couple of times in conversation over the past couple of weeks in different capacities with different people, and it needs to be addressed.
00:00:43.911 --> 00:00:58.241
I've been to plenty of clubs and when you walk in there's a funk, there's a smell, there's something that just isn't pleasant, and sometimes it's right.
00:00:58.241 --> 00:01:07.033
When you walk in, sometimes it's certain parts of the club, Oftentimes it's in bathrooms or washrooms, locker rooms I mean, I know that's where people get changed and everything.
00:01:07.033 --> 00:01:09.864
But I think people need to be aware of the funk.
00:01:09.864 --> 00:01:26.126
And nose blindness is a temporary, naturally occurring adaptation of your body that leads to an inability to detect or distinguish common sense in your surroundings, oftentimes called olfactory fatigue.
00:01:26.126 --> 00:01:32.944
So nose blindness is often associated with areas where we spend a lot of time, which makes total sense.
00:01:32.944 --> 00:01:50.250
It's why, when we have a hard time detecting common household odors, to me, I'm just a big fan of smell and sense and I know how important it could be, not just for, obviously, your personal self and your home and things, but for our clubs.
00:01:50.250 --> 00:01:53.528
I don't think our clubs should have a funk.
00:01:53.528 --> 00:02:10.811
They should have an amazing smell and even better if our clubs have their own unique and custom sense and smells and fragrances which, spoiler alert sometime next year I'm going to have one of my friends on who is a synthologist.
00:02:10.811 --> 00:02:14.770
She's a scent scientist.
00:02:14.770 --> 00:02:17.105
This woman is absolutely amazing.
00:02:17.105 --> 00:02:25.608
I want to bring her on and we're just going to talk about smell and scent and what that all means and how it triggers different emotions and reactions and the importance of it.
00:02:26.881 --> 00:02:35.829
Anyway, this is just a little public service announcement about understanding and realizing, or maybe not realizing, how your facilities smell.
00:02:35.829 --> 00:02:47.549
If you're not sure, ask Maybe a nice trusted person, or just look at people's faces as they come in, both members and nonmembers, especially people who haven't been there before.
00:02:47.549 --> 00:02:48.883
I think very important.
00:02:48.883 --> 00:02:52.286
So what causes nose blindness?
00:02:52.286 --> 00:02:54.905
Old factory fatigue?
00:02:54.905 --> 00:02:57.467
I like that one, but it's hard to say sometimes.
00:02:57.467 --> 00:03:06.691
No, but it's basically, our bodies get acclimated, they get accustomed to the smells and it's a natural adaptation.
00:03:07.840 --> 00:03:31.086
By decreasing the perception of sense that you're frequently or consistently or constantly exposed to, nose blindness helps prevent overstimulation of your senses so it can focus on other things, because what it does is by decreasing your ability to detect the common smells that you and your body are used to.
00:03:31.086 --> 00:03:56.641
It makes it easier for your body to pick up on something that's more out of the ordinary, like burning toast bread, gas leak toots and I'm just reading this now off healthlinecom is how exactly does nose blindness work and happen?
00:03:56.641 --> 00:04:03.893
Interesting that the biological details behind the mechanism of nose blindness are unknown.
00:04:03.893 --> 00:04:08.817
However, they do have a general picture of what goes on in your body when it happens.
00:04:08.817 --> 00:04:19.408
For example, when you inhale an odorants scent molecule, it binds to a receptor on a special type of sensory nerve cell that detects scents.
00:04:19.408 --> 00:04:23.971
This nerve cell produces an electrical signal that reaches your brain.
00:04:23.971 --> 00:04:26.427
Your brain then goes on to process the scent.
00:04:26.427 --> 00:04:36.269
With repeated or continuous stimulation by a particular odorant, the nerve cell eventually stops sending its electrical signal to your brain.
00:04:36.269 --> 00:04:39.869
As a result, you no longer perceive the scent.
00:04:39.869 --> 00:04:43.149
Essentially, you become nose blind.
00:04:43.149 --> 00:04:49.939
According to research not mine but healthlinecom, which it did pop up high in the search.
00:04:49.939 --> 00:04:52.466
So should be good, should be good info.
00:04:52.466 --> 00:04:57.990
But nose blindness is dependent on how an odorant enters the body.
00:04:57.990 --> 00:05:06.307
Research has shown that there is a greater impact on nose blindness if the odor is inhaled through your nose as opposed to through your mouth.
00:05:06.307 --> 00:05:08.461
I would hope so.
00:05:08.461 --> 00:05:16.925
Nose blindness seems to develop faster in response to unpleasant smells as opposed to pleasant smells, which also makes sense.
00:05:16.925 --> 00:05:28.151
Toots, the shape and chemical properties of an odorant can influence how quickly or slowly nose blindness occurs.
00:05:28.151 --> 00:05:29.860
That makes sense also.
00:05:33.848 --> 00:05:37.233
So, yeah, let's make sure all of our places smell amazing.
00:05:37.233 --> 00:05:39.225
Let's make sure our clubs smell good.
00:05:39.225 --> 00:05:49.302
Let's ask our members, let's ask some trusted people and if there is a funk, if there is a smell somewhere, let's get rid of it, let's handle it.
00:05:49.302 --> 00:05:58.466
I hate the response when you mention it to somebody, whether it's a club or not, and it's like oh yeah, I got to take care of that.
00:05:58.466 --> 00:06:03.221
Man smells a big thing, take care of it.
00:06:03.221 --> 00:06:11.245
So that's it, just a quick little update on nose blindness.
00:06:11.245 --> 00:06:16.122
And let's make sure all of our spaces smell amazing.
00:06:16.122 --> 00:06:19.107
